HVAC Duct Size Chart (Round, Rectangular, All Sizes Max CFM) (2024)

Properly sizing HVAC ducts is critical to ensuring the efficient and effective operation of your HVAC system.

In this article, we you will find HVAC duct size charts that provide guidelines for selecting the appropriate duct size for the airflow of your air conditioning / HVAC system.

In This Article:

How To Choose The Correct Size Duct

While fully designing your ductwork system can be quite complex, a lot of the work can be taken out of the equation by using simple rules and charts.

This page focuses on understanding the appropriate information required for the Ductwork Calculator. It includes aspects such as air flow CFM, friction loss (essentially loss resulting from friction), and velocity.

If you want to save yourself even more time, then head on over to our duct size calculator and have it do the hard work for you.

But if you want to take a look at the charts and data behind the calculator, then you have come to the right spot.

How To Use These HVAC Duct Size Charts

  1. Identify the volume of air (in CFM) that will be passing through the duct.
  2. Choose the appropriate duct size from the table based on the identified volume of air.
  3. In case the desired airflow exceeds the maximum CFM rating provided in the table, increase to the next larger size duct.
  4. Keep in mind that the listed CFM ratings are based on typical field results, and variations may occur. In such cases, it’s advisable to install dampers for better airflow control.
  5. If the duct run is longer than 25 feet or has numerous transitions, consider using the next larger size duct.
  6. You can easily print these charts out using the “Print Chart” button at the bottom of each table.

We have listed the friction rate used in the calculation on each chart. These friction rates are considered adequate for residential HVAC systems.

Standard Air Duct Sizes

We have included charts for most of the popular standard air duct sizes.

These include:

  • Round flex duct: 5 inch – 20 inch
  • Metal round pipe: 5 inch – 20 inch
  • 4 inch rectangular duct: 6 inch – 24 inch diameter
  • 6 inch rectangular duct: 4 inch – 30 inch diameter
  • 8 inch rectangular duct: 4 inch – 36 inch diameter
  • 10 inch rectangular duct: 4 inch – 40 inch diameter
  • 12 inch rectangular duct: 4 inch – 42 inch diameter

This is due to the fact that flex ducts often have obstruction issues, especially around bends.

For rectangular duct we use a friction rate of 0.07

what size duct do i need for Larger Airflow Amounts Like 3000, 4000, or 6000 CFM?

For larger systems with CFM ratings of 3000, 4000, 6000 or higher then you should contact a professional HVAC installer to help you plan out the system correctly. Making even a small mistake in planning for a high airflow system can have expensive ramifications down the track.

Why is Velocity Important?

When determining the correct duct size for an HVAC system, velocity plays a crucial role. Velocity refers to the speed at which air is circulated, or ‘flows,’ through the ductwork.

A well-calculated velocity ensures optimal efficiency in heat distribution and air circulation, maintaining a comfortable environment in your home.

Too high a velocity could lead to noise, increased wear and tear, and potential damage to your HVAC system. In contrast, too low may result in inadequate air distribution, causing uneven temperature and issues with heating and cooling efficiency.

Therefore, velocity must be carefully calculated and considered during duct sizing to ensure the HVAC system functions at its best.

What size ductwork do I need for a 3 ton unit? ›

Hello,Typically a 16X20 would be fairly standard for most applications on a 3 ton unit. However if you want superior air flow I would highly suggest putting in a 20X20 as that gives you far better airflow hands down.

What size round pipe for 1200 cfm? ›

If your hood is between 601 and 900 CFM, you need a minimum duct size of 7”. If your hood is between 901 and 1200 CFM, then you should go for a minimum duct size of 8”, and if you have a 1200 CFM hood, consider going for a minimum duct size of 10”.

What is the two-foot rule for ductwork? ›

The air now has to re-pressurize to regain its turbulent flow so it can continue to push its way down the duct. It requires about 24′ or two feet to do this. This is the 'Two-Foot Rule?. Ideally, you should allow at least 24′ between takeoffs and at the end of any duct run.

Does reducing duct size increase CFM? ›

The key takeaway here is that air moves from a larger to a smaller duct, the velocity increases. When it moves from a smaller to a larger duct, the velocity decreases. In both cases, the flow rate — the amount of air moving through the duct, in cubic feet per minute — stays the same.

How many cfm for a 3 ton AC? ›

Therefore, a 3-ton residential cooling HVAC system should have 1,200 cfm of air across its evaporator coil. A 5-ton system should have have 2,000 cfm, a 6-ton system should have 2,400 cfm, and so on and son.

What size round duct do I need for a 12x12 room? ›

Generally, a 12' x 12' room requires a 4” x 8” duct. The main factor in determining this size is airflow volume, measured in cubic feet per minute, or CFM. To adjust the CFM, you can change the speed of the blower or alter the ductwork size.

What is the rule of thumb for CFM per square foot? ›

One cfm is needed per square foot (1 cfm/sq ft) of floor area. This is the average air quantity required for a room or an entire building. This number is based upon an averaged heat load calculation for comfort cooling. There is an assumption of an 8-ft ceiling, no unusual window areas, and average insulation.

How do you calculate duct size for airflow? ›

The formula for calculating duct size often involves the airflow rate and the air velocity. The cross-sectional area of the duct (A) can be found using the equation A = Q / V, where Q is the airflow rate and V is the air velocity.

What happens if duct size is too big? ›

Dealing with oversized ducts can cause your HVAC unit to limit the amount of conditioned air that reaches the threshold of your home, forcing your unit to work harder than before to reach the desired interior temperature.

What is the most commonly used duct sizing method? ›

  • Equal Friction Method: It is the simple and most commonly used conventional method. ...
  • Velocity Method: It is one of the simplest methods of duct design but the problem is it requires the selection of suitable velocities in different duct runs, which requires experience.

What size ductwork for a 2.5 ton unit? ›

Example Duct System:

Sizing for a 2.5 Ton unit, we start with a 16" supply at 875 CFM -1125 CFM. We then take a 7" and 5" run (-200 CFM) off of this section bringing the remaining total to 675 CFM - 925 CFM.

How many CFM's is a 12 inch pipe? ›

A 12" duct can handle approximately 700 CFM of fresh air intake. An 8" duct can handle approximately 350 CFM of fresh air intake. A 12" duct has twice the square inch area as a 8" duct (pi r squared).

How do you calculate CFM for round ducts? ›

For round ducts, calculate area using the formula Area = π * r2, where r is the duct radius (in feet) and π = 3.14. Once the flow velocity and cross sectional area are known, air flow is easily calculated by multiplying these values.

How much CFM is lost through ducting? ›

section of ducting? Approximately 3% (straight hard cast) to 7% (fl ex ducting). 1% – 4% additional loss for every 90˚ bend.
